The difference between accessibility and search engine optimisation

Thursday, 25 January 2007

Firstly there's the issue of semantics - accessibility vs accessibility, I think if you leave basic optimisation out of your strategy you shouldn't be able say your websites accessible, becuase most people wont know it is there. Next while there are many overlaps between acccessibility and SEO there are three fundamental differences I can think of, that can seriously mess you up if you only take the accessibility approach - Forms, URLs & Mindset :

Accessibilty SEO
Forms
Forms OK if labeled correctlyForm objects not OK for spiders
URLs
Can support relatively complex URL stringsRequires simple, persistant URL strings
Mindset
How visitors interact with the website Attracting visitors to the correct   parts of the website
