Search and celluloid

Thursday, 29 January 2009

With Oscar buzz reverberating around the Guava office, it got me thinking about just how this year's list of nominees is reflected in UK search popularity.

Only one male movie star managed to creep in to MSN's Top 10 most searched for movie stars of 2008, Heath Ledger and this is obviously due to his sad death last year. The remainder of the list is a bevvy of beauties with Jessica Alba holding the number one slot - probably not due to her masterful acting performances (feel free to prove me wrong by naming one film you have seen her in).

The Academy Awards Panel's nominations only have two names in common with MSN's list, the afore mentioned Ledger who is nominated in the Performance by an actor in a supporting role category for his realisation of The Joker in The Dark Knight and magazine editors' favourite Angelina Jolie.

Jolie is up for Performance by an actress in a leading role for Changeling and has some stiff competition from Meryl Streep and the hotly tipped Kate Winslet.

Will the Oscars winners reflect our searches? - watch this space. My money is on Ledger & Winslet and I have insider knowledge.*

*I once used the loo in the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood - FACT!
