Bleeding vacant...

Thursday, 14 August 2008

X-Factor winner Leona Lewis has already surpassed all expectations for a reality TV star by actually being talented, but now she has gone one step further with her song Bleeding Love hailed as the most popular choice for homemade videos online.

According to the Guardian, "The MCPS-PRS Alliance, which collects and pays royalties to composers and songwriters, said the track was the most popular on websites - such as YouTube, iTunes and Bebo - which it licenses to use copyrighted music, and the most played on online radio stations."

As Leona is such a popular choice for back-bedroom divas on YouTube I decided to do a little tea-break research and Googled the track 'bleeding love' (just in case I have a spare half an hour and a hairbrush handy!). To my surprise no PPC ads were to be seen, considering the proven popularity of the track and the download savvy target market, I expected to see a host of ads calling me to DOWNLOAD NOW!

I then went on to search for 'Leona Lewis' and found one solitary PPC advert for the Teenage Cancer Trust of which Leona is a spokeswoman. Spurred on by the lack of PPC ads from download sites, record labels or concert ticket websites I began to search for other popular keyphrases in the entertainment industry.

This summer's blockbuster 'The Dark Knight' throws up a single PPC ad from entertainment news site http://www.screenrush.co.uk.

After a number of searches for the biggest names and album/film titles in showbiz I came to the conclusion it's predominately tabloids (The Sun) and gossip mags (Heat magazine) that are bidding on celebrity names, with a handful of online music retailers (Play.com & Asda Entertainment) dipping their toe in the water and bidding against bestsellers such as Amy Winehouse's 'Back to Black'.

With a new series of X-Factor on the way, surely ITV must see Leona Lewis fans as their target viewers?

Any thoughts on why the entertainment industry appears slow on the uptake?

There's so many keywords out there with no ppc ads but great potential...

The google doodle for example we tested an ad and got a thousand impressions in a minute
