Datacenters in a box Sun - Google?

Thursday, 19 October 2006

Pc3_project_blackbox_1_1 I wouldn't usually talk about enterprise server technology but I have been looking at Solaris 10 as a viable platform for our apps, and then this week Sun announces Project Blackbox which looks strikingly similar to the rumoured Google datacenter in box reported by Robert Cringely last year. Then there was that really weird Sun Google press conference which got all hyped yet sort of announced nothing,  Java in the toolbar, big deal, but then there was a shot of Eric on stage holding a 1u Sun server and looking all uncomfortable.

Even though Google supposedly builds its own machines I'd expect they'd still need some help from hardware experts,  and Solaris 10 on Sun hardware has some awesome features, namely energy saving, speed, containers, d-trace etc which I am sure they'd want to use. H'm, definitely worth keeping an eye on.
