Google buying YouTube?

Sunday, 08 October 2006

I just gave a presentation about YouTube and how it might be the future of entertainment search, and then WSJ reports on rumours that “Google Inc. is in talks to acquire popular video-sharing site YouTube Inc. for roughly $1.6 billion, according to a person familiar with the matter. The discussions are still at a sensitive stage and could well break off, this person says.”

Hitwise has an interesting comparison of Google Video vs YouTube and their own take on the potential deal, including why Google switched the Froogle link to Google video in June. My feeling is that this deal it makes good sense as long as Google can monetize YouTubes user base effectively and manage any copyright suits, even though dotcom billionaire and founder of Broadcast.com Mark Cuban disagrees saying " only a 'moron' would buy YouTube " .
