Google launches web analytics

Tuesday, 15 November 2005

Google has relaunched Urchin as the free  Google Analytics suite and integrated it with the Adwords interface.  In our opinion it was always predictable that this would happen from the moment they acquired Urchin, however it's going to have an impact on most of the small & mid teir analytics vendors in fact WebSideStories stock fell 12% yesterday on the announcement.

The main question advertisers need to be asking though is, do you really want Google nosing around in your checkout or knowing what your customers are doing?

It's one of the reasons Pay Per Click Search Engine independent tracking systems are popular with serious advertisers, you don't want the media owner knowing what converts. Obviously once the ripples created by this announcement die down we'll be able to see if the market feels the same way.
